The major Payment Card Brands in the world and the founding multi-national acceptance brand members of the PCI SSC are:

All Retail Merchants that store, process and/or transmit cardholder data must comply with the PCI Data Security Standard. This involves an annual audit which must be passed. Depending on the Merchant’s Level as determined by the Merchant’s Acquiring Bank this audit will consist of either:

1. An onsite audit performed by a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) for all Level 1 Merchants and all MasterCard Level 2 Merchants.
2. A Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) required from all Level 3 & 4 Merchants.

It's not an option for merchants accepting credit cards. You must perform these procedures or face stiff fines from acquiring banks.
