A successful organization is built on a solid framework for data and information. This framework defines how all of the different aspects of the organization will interact to carry out its operations. A framework is important because it is the set of rules that allow for consistent and secure actions of the individuals in an organization.

To establish a framework, an organization must first decide on a standard. In Information Technology there are four major standards: COBIT, ISO/IEC 27000, ICO/IEC 38500, and ITIL. Each of these standards breaks down the activities of an organization and establishes best practices for each.
